The “Back Mountain” is a region behind the mountain ridge forming the northwest side of the Wyoming Valley.  The area includes the Townships of:  Dallas, Franklin, Jackson, Lehman, Kingston and Lake.  The region also includes the Boroughs of Dallas and Harveys Lake.  Within Kingston Township are the areas known as Shavertown and Trucksville.

Back Mountain contains both the Dallas School District and the Lake Lehman School District.  The Dallas School District covers the Borough of Dallas and Dallas Township, as well as Franklin Township and Kingston Township, while Lake Lehman covers Lake Township and Lehman Township.  The community also has Misericordia University and the Penn State University Wilkes-Barre campus for higher education. Misericordia features the Pauly Friedman and MacDonald Art Galleries which are open to the public, as well as the annual Under the Stars Summer Arts Festival.
