The Borough of White Haven is situate on the eastern edge of Luzerne County and borders the beautiful Lehigh River.  Its origin dates back to the 1820s, making it the oldest established community in this area of the County.  By the 1840s coal mining was booming in nearby Wyoming Valley and a need developed to transport the coal to metropolitan areas.  A railroad was built from the Wyoming Valley to White Haven where a canal system then allowed the coal to be carried to market on barges.  White Haven today is a quaint town featuring a main street with shops and restaurants and lovely tree-lined residential streets with sidewalks.  It is a recreation hub with the Lehigh Gorge State Park on its border and the Delaware and Lehigh Anthracite Trail in its downtown.  A number of white water outfitters fill the river with thousands of rafters on the weekends.

Dennison Township, between White Haven and Mountain Top, is a heavily wooded, sparsely populated area with a few large lot subdivision and many large lot settings for a variety of homes and a few estates.

White Haven and Dennison Township are served by the Crestwood School District.

To the southwest of this area, toward Hazleton, are the communities of Freeland and Jeddo Boroughs and Foster Township.  Within Foster Township there are a number of subdivisions which provide primary and secondary homes attracting people from a tristate area due to its proximity to major highways.  The communities are served by the Hazleton Area School District.

Within a short drive of all these communities is Jim Thorpe, a town often called the “Switzerland of America” due to the picturesque scenery, mountainous location and architecture.  Rich with history and filled with attractions, Jim Thorpe is definitely a place to visit to enjoy all it has to offer.
