Originally a farming, timbering, ice harvesting and railroad community, Mountain Top began to grow in the 1950s when the Crestwood Industrial Park was created, replacing jobs lost with the closure of the deep mining industry in NEPA. Mountain Top evolved into a bedroom community creating housing for the new employees in the industrial park. At the same time, Interstates 80 and 81 were built nearby, creating an easy commute to other nearby cities and place the area within 2 hours of major metropolitan area.
The community is serene and peaceful. Natural beauty is everywhere. Recreation opportunities abound as each municipality has its own rec park plus Nescopeck State Park and the Lehigh and Delaware trail are within the community.
