Nanticoke is a city of approximately 10,400 at the lower end of the Wyoming Valley.  When anthracite mining was predominant in the early/mid 1900s Nanticoke City was the hub of business and retail in the area.  At its peak Nanticoke was the home to 27,000.  Much of the original population were immigrants who came to the states to mine coal.

As the mining industry tapered off, the population declined.  There remains a city center and many quiet residential neighborhoods with affordable housing.

The main campus of Luzerne County Community College was established in Nanticoke in the 1970s.  Over the years the college has grown to an enrollment of nearly 5,000 full and part time students drawn by over 100 academic, technical and career programs.  Most recently massive distribution centers have been built in neighboring Hanover Township, creating jobs and housing demand within the area.  Currently efforts are underway to revitalize an adjoining industrial park and create a massive rec park on lands that have been part of the coal industry.
